Stoker captained the first submarine AE2 to breach the Ottoman defences in the Dardanelles. While operating in the sea of Marmara the crew of AE2 lost control and inadvertently surfaced near the Ottoman torpedo boat Sultanhissar.The AE2 was fatally damaged by gunfire - Stoker and his crew surrendered, where they became prisoners of war. Four members of his crew were to die in captivity.

E14 took part in an operation to penetrate the Sea of Marmara. In April 1915 Her captain, Lieutenant Commander Edward Courtney Boyle received the Victoria Cross; Lieutenant Edward Geldard Stanley and Acting Lieutenant Reginald Wilfred Lawrence were both awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and all the ratings were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal
Later in her career, the E14 new captain, Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Saxton White was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Dardanelles on 28 January 1918

Born in Posen, a German U-boat commander during the Great War. With 194 ships and 453,716 gross register tons sunk, he is the most successful submarine ace ever. Нis victories came in the Mediterranean, almost always using his 8.8-cm deck gun. During his career he fired 74 torpedoes, hitting 39 times.For his achievements he was awarded the Pour le Mérite.

One of the most successful and highly decorated German U-boat commanders in the Kaiserliche Marine during World War I. He conducted 47 patrols and succeeded in sinking 146 ships for a total of 384.304 gross register tons. As such he is the second most successful submarine commander ever (by tonnage sunk). For his achievements he was awarded the Pour le Mérite.

He was the third highest-scoring U-boat commander of the war sinking 150 ships with a tonnage of about 310.000 tons, branded a war criminal by the Allies, for killing hundreds of civilians by sinking the SS Persia without first firing a warning shot on 30th December 1915. Among the 343 who lost their lives Eleanor Velasco Thornton who had posed as a model for the Rolls Royce hood ornament the Spirit of Ecstasy.
For his achievements he was awarded the Pour le Mérite.
