Gallery Solace - VC Awards 1914
Gallery Solace - The Great War 1914-1918
In only singling out those individuals who were awarded the Victoria Cross in the “First World War” by no means diminishes the bravery, verve, and sacrifice of those who served at the front of whatever nationality. On the contrary, the combatants of the ”Great War” often performed supreme acts of unimaginable heroism, self-sacrifice, courage, dogged determination, loyalty and comradeship that we now find impossible to comprehend in these modern times with out acknowledgment and awards.

VICTORIA CROSS RECIPIENTS
1914

In August 1914 when the British army arrived in France their role was to support their Belgian and French allies. Never numbering a quarter of a million men through out 1914 it was a comparatively small army (compared to the German and French forces) revelling in their nickname “The old contemptibles.”
This contemptible little army showed its worth but by the end of 1914 the British casualties numbered over 90,000.

In 1914 Forty Six Victoria Cross awards were made in France, Belgium, Africa and the Dardanelles. Thirteen of those were awarded posthumously. On this page we honour their memory in chronological order.
